Dr. Ray Luck in performance at the ALHCS Campus B
|
The concert took place at Campus B Auditorium on the new Steinway piano that was bought with funds raised by the Anguilla Music Teachers Association. The pianist gave justice to the new piano that he says is probably the best instrument in the Caribbean and he has played widely in the region.
Luck has performed in several music capitals of the world and on five continents since his first concert tour of the Caribbean that was sponsored by the government of Guyana. He studied music in London and France and had a distinguished teaching career at Randolph College in Lynchburg, Virginia. He has given master classes and lecture-recitals at prestigious music schools and also adjudicated music festivals in Canada, the UK, Hong Kong and the Caribbean. The current concert tour includes visits to St Lucia, Grenada, Barbados, Antigua, St Kitts and St Vincent and the Grenadines.
At the commissioning of the piano, earlier in the week, music teacher Lennox Vanterpool praised the many persons who had helped to make the purchase. On that occasion he said, “Following the birth of the idea over five years ago, many composers came together to complete this first song. The Anguilla Community Foundation was the composer who added the first phrase. Then Mr. John Benjamin chimed in with a rhythm all his own and our song was now well on the way. Cable and Wireless added clarity to composition some time later and the song really seemed to be taking on form. Individuals in the community heard the strains of our tune offered their voices-so Susie Lake-Marlin, Kathy Haskins and Eric Martineau all joined in, thus enhancing our melody. The Social Security Board and Ministry of Social Development, with manuscript and pencil in hand collaborated to compose the final movement of this beautiful work.” He also thanked the Anguilla Development Board, Michael Lipnicki the Steinway supplier, Timothy Hodge, Olive Hodge, Briggy Tomlinson, Johnno Edwards, Winston Bailey, Davon Carty and BET Tranquility Jazz Festival who all assisted in the purchase.
Vanterpool assured all those who contributed that the quality and demonstration of the value of the gift will be remembered long after the cost has been forgotten. He noted that music in a child’s curriculum has been proven to contribute significantly to their mental development.
