The Anguillian
Dear Mr. Editor:
THAT SIGN AT THE ROUNDABOUT
The current series of rallies by the Government, calling for a revolution and independence, is in keeping with the slogan: “We did it in ’67 and will do it again in 2011”.
|
It is not only the wording on a banner stretched across the fence at the George Hill Roundabout, but also the tail end expression of a recent radio broadcast by the Chief Minister. To take in context some of the expressions one has heard, the words appear to have the effect of inciting an unnecessary revolution that could lead to confusion and trouble on the island.
It is a matter that is causing some uneasiness among visitors to Anguilla, and I recently heard a representative of the Hotel and Tourism Association complaining about it during the Governor’s press conference. The complaint is that some tourists were getting upset and asking questions. Since then, I have heard about other fears.
I am disappointed that the Governments and whoever else may be responsible for the sign, has not removed it in the wake of the uneasiness it has caused. I think as a peaceful society we need to avoid indulgence in anything that can lead to misunderstanding and fear. And that banner is an unnecessary concern.
