Letters To The Editor - THE MATTER OF SERVICE CHARGE |
| Publishing date: 16.07.2010 10:15 |
The Editor,
The Anguillian
Dear Sir:
THE MATTER OF SERVICE CHARGE
|
I was relieved to see an article on the above matter in last week’s edition of The Anguillian and, to borrow an old phrase, “it scratched me where itched me.”
This is continuing to be a long cry of workers in the service industry, especially at our hotels and restaurants, and even in the machinery of Government only lip service is being paid to the matter.
Yes, as your article pointed out, “service charge is service charge.” It belongs to the workers and employers have no right to keep a portion or to apply any of it to wages. Wages are indeed wages for people’s hard labour and the service charge is intended for them in recognition of their service.
The question of a minimum wage is one that has been coming up just as often as service charge. There has been a lot of political rhetoric about this and yet nothing is being done to address the matter. As a consequence, workers are labouring like slaves. Who will listen to their cries and come to their aid?
