A feature article, on her school’s internet Comnmuniity homepage, stated that she never doubted her interest in public work, having observed how her parents had enjoyed working with the Anguilla Government in their public service roles.
Hazel, a Form 6 graduate of the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School, left Anguilla in 2000 to further her studies. She entered the prestigious Howard University where she graduated magna cum laude, achieving a double major in Economics and Political Science. She then entered George Washington University where she graduated in 2007 with a Master’s degree in Public Policy. While still in graduate school, she was employed as an Analyst in the US Government Accountability Office and, at present, she works in that agency’s Chicago office.
Driven by her academic passion, she recently entered the IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law. In recognition of her accomplishments, she was awarded the Honourable Abraham Lincoln Marovitz Scholarship. It is a full-tuition grant awarded once every three years to an incoming student with an outstanding commitment to public service.
Miss Gumbs was quoted as saying that she decided to enroll in the above College because of its overall reputation and the high quality of its faculty. She is of the view that the benefits of the institution’s vigorous writing programme will serve her well in the future.
She has further been quoted as saying: “My first day of classes showed me that IIT Chicago-Kent is not only diverse in the classes and experiences that it provides students, but that it admits a diverse student body as well. Classes have been extremely interesting and rewarding because each student provides a different perspective that serves to enrich our class discussions and our time together.”
