Letter To The Editor - Bad times, let's BANK on volunteering

Dear Sir,

Bad times, let's BANK on volunteering

As we all sit around complaining, concerned, and finding idle time, we might consider working on projects that need attention.

I would like to suggest that we develop a volunteer bank of resources that we have right here in Anguilla and can tap for the benefit of everyone.

I applaud the cleanup efforts that surfaced and continue to make an impact. We need more of the same and maybe even on a larger scale.

A couple of weeks ago there was mention of the Corito clean up based on an offshore company removing our metal waste for free. Unfortunately, there should have been a simultaneous effort to remove many of the auto wrecks scattered about the island. This improvement alone would beautify our landscape.
Our beaches are the gold we hold and yet we still don't give them the attention they need or should have.
Through volunteerism we could not only clean them up but enhance or create public access. Much has been said about public access to our beaches and how important this access, and use by all, should be maintained. Little has been done to create inviting entries and clean them up.

We could address this through a volunteer effort one beach at a time. We have plenty of idle machines and operators who would be able to make this happen with a small army of volunteers, students, and interested parties. I'm also sure that there are many in the community who would make contributions in material, time and even money to improve things.

There are a number of public buildings that need some attention. Sometimes only a coat of paint would be needed to bring them back to pleasant state. We need to volunteer and help out.

Can we all come together and create a Volunteer Bank with a plan and the energy to make a difference? This would not only improve our environment but would encourage all to make efforts to improve their properties.

Beautification will lift our spirits and will certainly be noticed by our visitors. They will return and tell everyone about the new and improved Anguilla.
We have the assets and it's time to show them off and show our best face.

I have to mention one area that is polluting Anguilla and being ignored. The signage that has been established in recent years has created a whole new problem. It's out of control.

I know everyone needs and wants to bring attention to his/her products and businesses but we don't even realise how we are visually damaging the landscape.
The Government has some laws and policies in place to address some of this. One problem is not having the manpower to police signage violations.

It would be an improvement if old, damaged, or out of date signage were removed by those responsible for their making.

My point with all this is to be better citizens, and don't expect others to fix those things we can take care of ourselves.

Again, let's do what should be done. Let's just make it a community effort to make this island more desirable to our visitors.

Hoping for improvement on all fronts
