Dear Mr Editor,
|
Keithley Benjamin Appointed
Junior Magistrate
Please permit me a little space in your paper to comment on the captioned matter.
A former high court judge in his blog column and the Anguilla Bar Association in a statement in The Anguillian two weeks ago, have come out strongly against Mr Benjamin's appointment as junior magistrate. I suppose that that is a true example of "being judged by your peers".
What I find facinating is that Mr Benjamin will retire as a top cop after 30 years service in the police force. He is entitled to all the rights, privileges and financial benifits related thereto.
He is still a young man not yet attaining retirement age of 55 years. He then moves on to a new job as junior magistrate rather than a junior lawyer in a law firm, and that is a great move on his part. He is accademically qualified for the job and he will be working under a senior magistrate to get on the job experience. So here is a situation of "being at the right place at the right time".
Furthermore, we hear a lot about"Anguilla for Anguillians", and"Anguillians first", and I was reliably informed that no other Anguillian applied for the job, and that the only other applicant was either an English or Irish lady. I think that the process of elimination is very clear in this matter.
We are free to judge whether Mr Benjamin was a good cop or a bad cop, but no one could question his training. We will no doubt pay close attention to his performance in his new job, and we should at least wish him God's Blessings.
Thank you Mr Editor for allowing the space in your paper to express my opinion.
Yours sincerely
Richard V. Hobson
