J. W. PROCTORS TRACK AND FIELD SPORTS MEET


Primary school children from throughout Anguilla, and a team from Montserrat, participated in the Fifth Annual J W Proctors Track and Field Meet at the Ronald Webster Park on Sunday, February 21, the day after it was postponed as a result of inclement weather.

The sporting events were held in cooperation with the Department and Ministry of Sports. Winston Duncan, who presided over the activities, welcomed the athletes, thanked them for their participation and urged them to give of their best in terms of effort and discipline.

He was pleased that there were some exceptional performances and hoped that a number of the Anguillian athletes would follow in the path of Shara Proctor who recently did the second best long jump (6.61 metres) in the world, and her sister, Shinnel, who is doing very well in athletics at Illinois University. “You too can reach that level. It is just a matter of practice and how hard you are prepared to work,” he told the young athletes.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Sports, Youth and Culture, Mrs. Chanelle Petty-Barrett, applauded the Department of Sports and its partners for organising this year’s event, and J. W. Proctors for their sponsorship which showed that they were good corporate citizens setting an example for other businesses. “We welcome our visiting team from Montserrat and trust you will enjoy your stay in Anguilla, and I wish all the athletes well,” she said. “I know you have been practicing hard; please do your best and win as many medals as you can.”

The events were as follows: 300 metres race for girls and boys under 9 and under 11; 400 metres for boys and girls under 13, 15 and 17-plus; 80 metres for girls under 9; 100 metres for girls and boys under 11, 13 and 15.

In many cases, the winning positions were adjudged from 1st to 4th place. In all, there were 68 winning athletes in the various events which provided a lot of excitement and healthy competition for the youngsters
