Letters To The Editor - EVERYWHERE IS A GARBAGE DUMP

The Editor,
The Anguillian

Dear Sir:

EVERYWHERE IS A GARBAGE DUMP

Corito, though a beautiful area, against the backdrop of an ocean view, is the official dump site for all garbage in Anguilla, yet there are many unofficial dumping sites at many bush locations on the island.
This is neither good nor healthy and is a national disgrace. One only has to walk through some of the shrubs, particularly in the western areas, to see how conveniently and recklessly garbage is dumped there rather than the persons doing it taking the time to drive to Corito. Everywhere seems to be a garbage dump.

This is illegal dumping and, in some cases, by examining the type of solid waste refuse, it is not difficult to determine its source. The bad thing about this practice also is that if investigators were to trace the origin, the evidence may point to a particular business establishment but which may be unaware that their refuse drivers are taking a shot cut for some reason.

I would recommend that the Health Environmental Department should undertake some surveys to determine the extent of the dumping problem and take any necessary steps to deal with the situation.

B. N. Richardson
