Letters To The Editor - BELOW THE BELT ELECTION CAMPAIGNING

The Anguillian

Dear Sir:

BELOW THE BELT ELECTION CAMPAIGNING

As a non-belonger of Anguilla, and therefore only a visitor, I do not wish to become embroiled in the local politics, but I think that I have the right and freedom, though an outsider, and nameless in this letter, to state that I am alarmed at the low level of political campaigning on the island.
It is certainly hitting below the belt, bringing people’s reputations and names in question and is senseless and uncalled for. I do not know what effect that sort of low-down politicking will have at boosting the attacking candidates’ chances of winning at the polls, but what I know is that in other societies that level of destructive politics would be counter-productive, costing brawlers valuable votes.

I wish to congratulate the various churches for coming together to hold the service for the candidates contesting the elections. At least that may bring home to some of them a realisation of the high moral ground they should take in the campaigning.

Whatever is the outcome of the general election, the hope is that the victors would be responsible to the tasks before them and that Anguilla would once more settle down in harmony and love. One thing everybody should remember is that “a people get the government they deserve.”
