SEcond Open Letter To The Honourable Minister Of Finance, Victor Banks |
| Publishing date: 31.12.2009 12:21 |
29th December 2009
Dear Minister
The Anguilla United Front's policy priority should be the interests of the people, not a handful of millionaires.
As I have said elsewhere, you may claim, as a party, to be "united to lead" and to "have Anguilla at heart", but that is not the message that came across from your speech to your Valley South supporters on 18th December.
|
The final and shocking indication of your priorities came as the punchline of your speech. You said, and I quote your exact words: "....every day I've got to listen to the amount of misleading the criticisms the nonsense that are spouted on the airwaves throughout Anguilla about government's contribution when I know within my heart that we have done our best and that the people of Anguilla understand that we've made a contribution today, that we've made millionaires in Anguilla - millionaires - and the sad thing, the sad thing, some of the same millionaires is getting up on platforms and saying we have done nothing for Anguilla - the same millionaires". Well I agree that you should know whether you have made millionaires; you may have done for all I know, but who they are and which of them have been getting up on platforms and criticising you I have no idea.
But in any case, what interest is it to the many thousands of Anguillians who have not only not been made millionaires but who are suffering and have not benefited or have benefited inadequately from the failures of your administration? And what does the making of a few millionaires do for the many? Those are the people - the many - who are my priority, and the millionaires (whoever they may be) who you say accuse the AUF administration of having done nothing for Anguilla are right, absolutely right. You have done nothing for those who needed it most. I have no objection to people becoming millionaires through honest effort and initiative, but to suggest that the creation by your government of a few millionaires is a measure of your government's success gives the game away, and is an affront to the vast majority of Anguillians who have no prospect of benefiting from your kind of wealth creation.
Yours sincerely,
Pam Webster
APP Candidate for District One
