The arts and crafts produced by students at Campus A of the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School, and displayed at the Scouts and Guides Ruthwill Auditorium, could easily have been mistaken for imported products or works done by professional persons in Anguilla.

It was the high quality of finish on the varied exhibits that made many spectators marvel as they moved from one set of displays to the other. The displays filled the entire first floor of the building late last week.

The exhibits were mainly done as part of the School Based Assessments (SBAs) work, the best of which were selected for CXC grading. The many other items exhibited were either for sale or for the students to take home. The excellent work not only demonstrated the talents of the students, but the high level of teaching skills which the arts and crafts teachers are imparting in the classrooms.

The teachers included Louise Brooks, Head of the School’s Arts and Crafts Department, Kathyria Smith, Iris Gumbs, Yasmini Lloyd and Melsadis Fleming (who is also Deputy Principal) and Dervin Leiba.
The exhibition, “Creative Hands 2009,” included multi-coloured tie and dye exhibits, beautiful ceramic vessels of various models, screen prints, batik, macramé works, crochet, decorative crafts, paintings and other forms of arts and crafts except wood craft.

It is hoped that a number of the students will pursue their interest in arts and crafts and either become art teachers or practicing artists in the local market of the tourist industry.
