The day was glorious and the Anguilla Eels Rugby Football Club play, in the annual St Martin Archibald Rugby Club tournament, was just as spectacular.

Not 45 days since the game of Rugby was announced as an Olympic sport for the 2016 games in Rio, our island nation was able to do Anguilla proud by making it to the semi finals against very tough experienced competition from St Martin.

Led by local Anguillans Shawn Carty and Laroy Carty, our team came back to win several matches that were very tough. Backed up by veterans Jason Chapman, David Preston, Tim Carrol, and Mark Harris who flies in from Canada every year.. The lads were scoring tries fast and furiously. Timely intercepts and strong running by Shawn and Laroy provided the Anguillian supporters, who made the trip over with the team, have lots to cheer about....The chant "Go Eels" could be heard all the way back to our clubhouse, at Ripples Restaurant in Sandy Ground. Even the veteran players of St Martin congratulated the Eel players on their fine defense and cunning moves. We really need to start a regular team of Anguillians, and would be overjoyed if we could make Anguilla the best Caribbean team for the Olympics in 2016 something to train for, in the meantime we will continue to build our team to play St Kitts, St Barts and St Martin..great opportunity for the young people of Anguilla.
