The Friends of the Hospital, one of the long-established non-governmental organisations in Anguilla, has made a presentation of US$500 to the Princess Alexandra Hospital.

In presenting the cheque to Director of Health Services, Dr. Franklin Lloyd, on Tuesday February 11, President Audrey Brooks said the donation was made towards the purchase of blankets.

Just before the presentation, Patron of the Friends of the Hospital, Diane Johnstone, wife of the Governor, said the organisation had been in existence for a long time [up to 30 years]. She noted that each year the members had raised funds from tea parties, lunches and other such activities towards a luncheon for senior citizens just before Christmas. She was pleased that last Christmas a number of business places, especially the Anguilla Electricity Company (ANGLEC), had provided a very generous sponsorship of the event.

Mrs. Johnstone said the Friends of the Hospital had undertaken to visit a number of elderly shut-ins and had now taken on the adoption of a young child of a single parent thus providing some much-needed assistance to that small family.

Principal Nursing Officer, Serene Carter-Davis, said she was well acquainted with the work of the Friends of the Hospital, from the days of the Cottage Hospital and Senior Citizens Home at Crocus Hill, and commended its members for their good work over the years. She was grateful that they had seen one of the needs of the Princess Alexandra Hospital and had undertaken to fill that need.

Dr. Lloyd said the cheque was a timely gift to meet a most appropriate need at the hospital. He commended the Friends of the Hospital for its continuing work and pledged that the money would be used for the intended purpose.
