The partnership came in the form of the Red Cross participation in the First Soroptimist International of Anguilla Health Fair, which was held on Saturday September 26 at the Gazebo of the Scouts and Guides Ruthwill Auditorium from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.
The fair included free service booths to check and advise on various health matters including Osteopathy, Cancer, Mental Health, Dental Health, Diet, Diabetes and Hypertension matters, HIV and AIDS awareness and related issues, Eye Care, and Alternative Wellness.
The Red Cross exhibit comprised literature and posters of the work of Red Cross throughout the region and the world, First Aid literature and equipment, communications equipment, Disaster Preparedness handouts and other literature and the popular Massage Booth where visitors to the Fair could experience upper back, neck and shoulder massages.
President of the Anguilla Red Cross Ash Hodge expressed his delight with the organization’s participation in the Soroptimist Fair. He said it was a great occasion for sharing and information exchange with other sectors of health and safety on the island.
According to Hodge, it gave the Anguilla Red Cross another opportunity to let other participants and the public in general know of the work of the local Branch. He commented that the Red Cross display and information were well received and many persons showed interest in the work of the organization.
Mr. Hodge thanked Professional Masseuse Kay Bell for her continued contribution to the Anguilla Red Cross by donating her time and expertise. He extended thanks to all members and volunteers who donated their time and effort to make this outing a success, particularly Teresa Williams and Luis Bryan.
The Anguilla Red Cross is an Overseas Branch of the British Red Cross. Globally, the organisation has over 97 million members and volunteers, with its headquarters in Geneva Switzerland.
Programme Action Committee Chair, Brenda Carty, said she hoped that Saturday’s Health Fair would be an annual event. She indicated some disappointment that more people did not attend but was generally pleased with the outcome.
The Programme Action Committee oversees six subcommittees including Education, Health, International Goodwill and Understanding, Social and Economic, Human Rights, and Environment. Pamela Connor chairs the Health Subcommittee that hosted the Fair while Blondelle Rodgiers is President of the local branch.
Soroptimist International is a worldwide organisation for women in management and professions working through service projects to advance human rights and the status of women. There are around 3,000 Soroptimist clubs in 125 countries and territories throughout the world. Anguilla is a member of the 28-country Federation of Great Britain and Ireland.
