Captain of the Police Team and the cricketers’ Public Relations Officer, Matthew Jordon, said the money would assist the players in their tour to Bermuda on a date to be announced. “I sincerely wish to say thank you to NAGICO for assisting the Police and Prison Cricket Team on this tour especially in these challenging economic times,” he remarked at the presentation ceremony.
“The Police and Prison Cricket Team was formed in February 2009 and has been playing in the local tournament,” he went on. “We are trying to strengthen the relationship of the Police and Prison with the community in which we have started a number of projects. The first one was an extensive clean-up of the grounds of Campus B of the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School. We want to show members of the public that they can trust us and to feel at ease when there is a police presence in any part of the island. We have a number of projects lined up including churches to paint and beaches to clean so many persons in the various districts will be seeing us around.”
Mr. Jordon said the team of 15 players and 3 officials, mainly comprised police and prison officers along with some members of the public. “We performed pretty well in the CCB-sponsored local tournament this year,” he stated. “We were runners-up to the Comprehensive School Team and we think our chances of winning the tournament are pretty good in Bermuda.”
He reported that his cricket team had already indicated to Bermuda that it would be hosting the tournament next year and he hoped that NAGICO [and other businesses in Anguilla] would again provide some financial assistance. It is being arranged for six or seven regional islands to participate in the tournament and to compete for the championship trophy.
NAGICO’s Sales Representative, Carlyn Carty, who presented the cheque, expressed the hope that the company would be able to further assist the team in its cricket matches and community projects.
