Last Friday, September 18, four members of the group presented a supply of copying machine toner to the school to assist teachers in preparing work for students as well. The group also presented tin-set for tiling the kitchen. A stove and an air-conditioning unit are next on the list of donations which the group is working towards.
“We are just trying to uplift the school so that the students would have much reason to be proud, and be at east in their learning environment,” President of “PROJECT HAANDS”, Paul Harrigan, told The Anguillian.
Freddie Harrigan, another leading member of the group, was of the view that Island Harbour was the least supported area of the island and that “PROJECT HAANDS” had been formed to provide much-needed assistance in the district particularly to the school. “Our desire is to do our best to bring this school up to par so that there is a better environment in which our children can learn,” he stated.
“We need a lot of stuff at the Island Harbour School which is in bad shape. There are wires hanging all around, with no proper lighting, and there is no playground. We are also backward in sports because we have no help; and there is also a need for more and better teachers at this school and even in the other schools.”
Mr. Harrigan added that the money spent on the Island Harbour School was btained mainly from fund-raising efforts held by “PROJECT HAANDS” during this year’s Festival Del Mar.
John Lloyd, Vice President of the group, commented that its work was aimed at a good cause and creating a positive environment and future for the children.
Principal of the Island Harbour Primary School, Tracelyn Hamilton, thanked the members of “PROJECT HANDS” on behalf of the parents, staff and students for their kindness and for being partners in education.
Monique Webster, is the Secretary/Treasurer of “PROJECT HAANDS”, and also Secretary of the Parent Teachers Association.
