Two Footballers Leave Island For UK On Football Scholarships

Tears rained down at the Wallblake Airport on Sunday 6th September, 2009, as the Anguilla Football Association continued its commitment to the development of young people through the game of football, when two of its players left the island to study in the United Kingdom.

The families and friends of Akemel Rogers and Kevois Lake, along with representatives from the Anguilla Football Association, were on hand to see the two young men leave the island for Uxbridge College on a football scholarship.

Through the relationship between the Anguilla Football Association and Uxbridge College, the two youth national players have been afforded the opportunity to play football for the Uxbridge College team while pursuing an education. Rogers and Lake are the first two Anguillian footballers to attend Uxbridge College under the arrangement between the two institutions. Even though neither Rogers nor Lake will know any of their teammates, they are resting confidently because Uxbridge is a very prominent educational institution in the United Kingdom with over twenty nationalities represented between its two campuses.

In 2008, Uxbridge College was judged to be outstanding by the Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills. The excellent success rates have also distinguished Uxbridge as one of the most successful colleges in the country. Its Higher Education qualifications are rapidly growing in popularity and are the equivalent of up to two years study at university, while being significantly cheaper.

President of the Anguilla Football Association, in his presentation to the two student athletes, challenged them to use the opportunity not only for their development but to also serve as ambassadors for Anguilla. He said, “...What you accomplish there, and how you conduct yourselves, will serve as the means of strengthening the relationship between the college and the Association.”

Both Akemel and Kevois are on two-year programmes studying Information Technology and Business Studies respectively. Their programme involves afternoon training with the football team and matches against other schools every Wednesday.

The Anguilla FA extends very best wishes to both of them in their matriculation through Uxbridge College.
