Ministry Of Education Congratulates CXC Students On Their Performance

The Ministry of Education, Library Services, Sports and Youth & Culture would like to congratulate the candidates who sat the May/June 2009 CXC Examinations. At the national level CSEC performances showed improvement over recent years. A pass rate of 74% of subject entries in a comprehensive school speaks volumes for student, parent teacher and school efforts.

We wish to commend the system wide approaches which resulted in 25 of 30 subjects having pass rates of 75% and above and 11 subjects having 100% passes. As one of the core subjects, performance in Mathematics continues to be of concern.

A wide range of opportunities for students to express their potential in technical subjects continues to be provided.

The national average of 84% of subject entries passing at CAPE is a decline from the highs of 92.5% in 2008 but still comparable to other recent years. Of the 37 units examined there were 100% passes in 20 units with 26 having pass rates of 75%.

While the overall level of performance has been noted, of greater concern is the fall in the percentage of students achieving top grades. Students are encouraged not to underestimate the CAPE Units and devote the necessary discipline to their studies.

While praise is due to the students, supporting parents and educators for maintaining standards, we must continue to challenge our students to aim for excellence. We are striving to educate them to function effectively in a rapidly changing technological and increasingly globalised society.
Congratulations to all those achieving passing grades. To those who did not achieve the desired grades, take every opportunity to improve on your grades or gain expertise in other areas.
