Vacation Bible School Marches For Jesus |
| Publishing date: 28.08.2009 10:06 |
The Church of God of Holiness Annual Vacation Bible School reached a climax on Saturday August 22 with a ‘March for Jesus’ from the Gazebo on the grounds of the Scouts and Guides Headquarters to the Church on the Princess Alexandra Road.

Sister Denise Gumbs, a teacher at the week-long Summer School, pointed out that the programme, held during the third week in August, was extended to children from age three to 12 and older. She said, despite whatever other activities occurred during August, the Bible School always had a good turnout. She disclosed that a maximum of 157 students attended this year’s Bible School, now in its eighth year. She added that there were six teachers with each teacher assisted by a helper, usually an alumnus of previous Vacation Bible Schools.
Under the theme ‘Escaping from Danger,’ the programme included activities such as memorising Bible verses, listening to Bible stories and learning various arts and crafts. Sister Gumbs said the focus of the Camp was ‘Noah and the Ark.’
Assistant Pastor of the Church of God Holiness, Gleason Brooks, said in spite of the threat of a hurricane, there was still “a good amount of children coming out faithfully and inviting other young people.” He described the students as very receptive and involved.
Pastor Brooks remarked that the theme this year highlighted the importance of building an ark for life: a safe place to retreat when the storms of life come by. He said the parents of the attendees asked for a longer Summer School because they are impressed and appreciative of the things that their children share with them after the one week. He opined that it might not be wise to extend the camp to more than a week because many other activities occur during the same time.
Brooks extended a call to the youth of Anguilla to “get involved in some church.” He said what he learned in church and Sunday School has been a foundation for his life. He referred to it as a firm foundation upon which a life could be built. He added that when unforeseen challenges arise in the future the foundation helps.
Sister Veta Greenwood was the main organiser of the march.
On Sunday August 23 the Summer School held a church programme that featured the students. The activity enabled parents and others to see what their children learned during the week.
