Letters To The Editor - THE FLEECING OF THE ANGUILLIAN PEOPLE

THE EDITOR

Dear Editor,

THE FLEECING OF THE ANGUILLIAN PEOPLE

Please allow the Anguilla Democratic Party some space in your paper to express what we consider to be unfair reporting by the media on the political situation in Anguilla.
Recently, we, the members of the Anguilla Democratic Party, listened and read views expressed on the air and in the newspapers on what the United Front and the Anguilla United Movement believe should take place. We believe that our reporters fail to perform their duties by having balanced reporting.
The Anguilla Progressive Party and the Anguilla Democratic Party have both expressed their views on how the economic situation on Anguilla should be addressed. The Anguilla Democratic Party publicly cautioned Government about going to England for improved borrowing guidelines. We stated the likely outcome of the discussions in the U.K., at four meetings, before the departure of the Anguilla delegation. We informed the listening public that the British Government will advise the delegation that they should “raise taxes, introduce income tax and stop giving away hard earned funds.”

When one examines the correspondence from the British Minister, it is almost identical to what we stated. However, the press has mentioned nothing about our views but insist on only mentioning the views of the Government and that of the Anguilla United Movement. WE CONSIDER THIS AS FLEECING OF THE ANGUILLIAN PEOPLE, denying them other perspectives (points of view) on the situation and pretending that only the opinion of the present Chief Minister, the Minister of Finance and the Leader of the Opposition matters.

We, the members of the Anguilla Democratic Party, object to this kind of reporting, intentional or not, and kindly request that balanced reporting be done as other parties vying for election have provided the Anguillian people with credible alternatives. We do hope that more investigative reporting be done in the future so that Anguillians will have a proper choice in the next general election.

Julian R. Harrigan,
General Secretary,
Anguilla Democratic Party
