NBA Awards Winners Of The Fifth Annual NBA Peter Perkins Memorial Boat Race |

The Sonic took home the trophy for first place for the 2009 National Bank of Anguilla Limited (NBA) Peter Perkins Memorial Boat Race. The Prize Giving Ceremony for the race was held on Wednesday August 12, at the NBA Boardroom. Market Research and Business Development Support Officer Deslyn Smith chaired the Ceremony and Contact Centre Supervisor Marlene Sasso distributed the prizes.

Winners of the 5th Peter Perkins Race

Present at the event were CEO of NBA, E. Valentine Banks and other Bank Management personnel, members of the Anguilla Boat Racing Committee and representatives of the winning boats as well as the media.
Keryle Lewis represented Sonic. The 2009 Memorial Race Champions received 1200 US dollars with their trophy. Mrs. Smith noted that Sonic was the only boat to have won twice in the five years that the NBA-sponsored race has been running.
In second place was the Eagle, represented by Mr. Paul Harrigan who received 1000 US dollars and a trophy on behalf of his team.
The 2009 Champion of Champions winners, Satellite, occupied the third place spot. Satellite was, represented at the ceremony by its captain Emile Lloyd. The boat won 900 US dollars and a trophy.
Fourth place went to NWO who received a check for 800 US dollars and in fifth place was the 2006 champions Light and Peace. They received a check for 700 US dollars.

Treasurer of the Anguilla Boat Racing Committee Andre Hall accepted a check of 1500 US dollars to go towards the expenses of producing the race.
Mrs. Smith commented that NBA was very proud in its ability to build on the culture of Anguilla and, in particular, boat racing. She expressed the banks privilege to have been given the opportunity to host the event and hoped that the level of participation will continue from all the boats in the future.
Smith thanked the Anguilla Boat Racing Committee for making the usual preparations for the race and making it a success.
On Sunday July 26, eleven A-Class boats competed in the Peter Perkins Memorial Race for the top five positions. Eight of them completed the race. It was the fifth consecutive year that NBA sponsored the event.
For many years Peter Perkins was the Stake Man, the individual who placed the stake which is the marker to indicate the end points of the racing route. According to Mr. Hall, Perkins, who lived in North Hill, died some six years ago. The Boat Racing Committee Treasurer noted that Perkins, a fisherman, was an avid advocate for boat racing in Anguilla.
