Amateur Radio Society Gets Equipment From Governor

He was particularly pleased that young people were being encouraged to become involved in ham radio operation as part of an ongoing effort to develop amateur radio in Anguilla.
Apart from its benefits to communications in times of hurricanes, he noted that it was a worthwhile hobby providing opportunities to establish contacts and friendships with other ham operators in various parts of the world.
The equipment included an HF Radio, antenna switch and cable, power supply and power meter and 100 foot of coaxial cable. In expressing gratitude particularly to former Governor, Andrew George, Deputy Governor, Stanley Reid, and Staff Officer, Peter Roberts, Keith Stone Greaves of the AARS said the equipment would be kept at the Scouts and Guides Ruthwill Auditorium for the use of members of the Society and for training.

He reported that there were about twenty seasoned members in the Radio Society and that five new persons had recently passed the required exams. Another ten are to be trained later. He noted that ham radio was a great hobby shared by millions of people everywhere and the society was endeavouring to develop the leisurely pastime in Anguilla.

He observed however that ham radio had an important role to play in communications in the event of hurricanes or other disasters. He said that the Anguilla Amateur Society would be working closely with the Department of Disaster Management and the Operations Centre at Police Headquarters when the occasion arose. He added that to that end the Society had embarked on training members in operation procedures and other related techniques.
