Shara Does Well In Her First Grand Prix


Anguilla’s premiere athletes Shara Proctor and Denvil Ruan are in the final stage of their preparations for the World Championship Games to be held in Berlin, Germany this coming weekend. Both athletes have competed in two warm up meets in the last two weeks.

Last weekend, Shara competed in her first Grand Prix on the European Circuit in Cottbus, Germany and came second in long jump with a leap of 6.59 metres. She was edged out by Melis Mey from Turkey who won with a wind aided leap of 6.66 metres. The previous weekend Shara competed in the Austrian National Championship and won with a leap of 6.37 metres.

Denvil also competed in the Austrian National Championship. He ran the 100 metres and clocked a time of 11.53 seconds. Last weekend, he ran the 100 metres in an Invitational Meet in Nurtingen, Germany where he clocked a time of 11.44 seconds.
Denvil will compete in his first heat in the 100 metres at the World Champion Games on 15 August while Shara will jump in the preliminaries on 21st August.

In a related story, the president of the Amateur Athletic Association, Ms Lorna Rogers and the coach Wilma Proctor left the island on Sunday for Germany to attend the International Association of Athletic Federation Congress and the Games.
