Lloyd’s as the inn is affectionately named is a family operated business that today is managed by brother and sister, David A. Lloyd Jr. and Vida Christine Lloyd-Richardson who are the son and daughter of the original owners. Clyde Richardson ably assists them along with three seasoned members of staff – Hosapha Rogers, Merline Carty and Maura Smith who handle the day-to-day operations. Faustina Carty who was the longest serving employee recently retired from her role as Chef after 34 years of service.
The history of Lloyd’s Guest House (the original name) is a testament to the dreams and determination that the people of Anguilla have long held. More than half a century ago, David S. Lloyd Sr. had the creative vision of building a 10-room guesthouse on Crocus Hill – the highest point on the island located a short distance’s walk to the beach and sea at Crocus Bay. He together with the assistance of a dedicated community team constructed tourist lodgings at a time when all the work had to be done manually. The project was completed in 1954 and the first guests were welcomed five years later. In 1963, Mr Lloyd Sr. married Nurse Vida M. Brooks and the husband and wife fashioned an authentic style of Anguillian hospitality service that continues to this day. Whilst he focussed on developing the business, she concentrated on creating a comfortable environment. They worked together until his passing in November 1989 after which Mrs Lloyd took on greater responsibility for managing the property until she passed in October 2003.
Today, Lloyd’s remains “home away from home” for many guests. It is a timeless place having the quaintness of old yet updated and modernised with Internet access on site for guests staying on the property. Each of the 13 guest rooms is a mix of traditional and modern design with bright, bold colours that are pleasing to the eye. They have cable television, air conditioning and en suite bathrooms. No two rooms are alike and four of them were recently added to the inventory. All are specially named – some after repeat guests or famous people.
