Dear Sir,
|
A FOOTPATH FOR SLAVES
I want to inform the public of some of the facts in my knowledge in relation to the property now owned by the Reverend John A Gumbs at Little Bay leading to Limestone Bay.
1) This property is approximately one acre in size and WAS landlocked completely having the only access being the sea, if not for his loving neighbors.
2) A footpath was used in 1880 -1890 by the slaves who dug for phosphate in the Limestone Bay area, and they used the track from the Quarry through ALL the lands finishing at Crocus Bay to the wharf there to be shipped.
3) After a number of years this footpath, approximately 3000 feet before and 1800 feet after, was widened by the owners giving land free from Roaches Hill to Limestone Bay, with the exception of 260’ which passed along the Rev. John A Gumbs property.
4) If at any time the Rev John A Gumbs receive compensation, his loving and Christian heart should allow him to give some of it to the innocent landowners who allowed him vehicular access and not the use of a footpath or the sea to his land.
