Letters To The Editor

Dear Sir

LET'S RAISE THE LEVEL OF DEBATE IN THIS ELECTION

In a letter on page 6 of your 3rd July edition, a correspondent who did not have the confidence to identify himself (signing himself as "Inquirer") made the following loaded allegation:

"Imagine, therefore, that at a recent opposition public meeting at Island harbour a speaker got up and declared that he had switched his allegiance from the Government's party because he did not get a job to work in the Ministry of education......."

Your correspondent's theme was that this was an example of someone seeking a paid job by way of political patronage.

I venture to guess that your correspondent knew perfectly well that this had not been the speaker's intention at all. His sole motive had been to offer his undoubted skills for the betterment of the Anguilla educational system and remuneration had been the last thing on his mind.

If your correspondents are to remain free to conceal their identities, so that it is impossible to assess the value or integrity of their comments, at a time of crucial debate that will affect the very future of Anguilla, I hope that the Anguillian people will treat deceptions of the kind exemplified by your correspondent's letter with the scepticism they deserve.

Yours faithfully,

Pam Webster

APP Candidate for District 1
