Anguilla Poets Recognized |

This year’s Malliouhana Poetry Competition culminated in a prize giving ceremony on Friday June 19 at the Teachers’ Resource Centre. The competition, under the theme: “Standing at Crossroads Facing Choices,” showcased a number of categories including 5 to 8 years, 9 to 12 years, 13 to 17 years, adults, Nation Language, and Spoken Word.

The ceremony included opening remarks by Chairman Mrs. Brinette Richardson, a prayer by Mr. Bernard Wattley, remarks by Ms. Carla Harris-Pascal and the vote of thanks by Mrs. Lisa Bass-Browne.
Brinette Richardson described the competition as “a huge event indeed.” She confirmed that it was organized to highlight the work of aspiring poets, “those in the closet and out,” as a means of encouraging them to keep on writing.

Lisa Bass-Brown commended the organizers, sponsors, poets, teachers and judges for their contributions to the success of the competition. She recognized the efforts of the Carla Harris-Pascal, Sharon Lake, Jane Grell, and Linda Lake for their role as members of the organizing team; and thanked the management and staff of the Library and the Teachers Resource Centre as well as the media, the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Youth and Culture for the assistance.
Anais L’etang took home the top prize for the 5 to 8 year category while the 9 to 12 year segment was won by Kyiz Edwards. Owean Hodge nabbed the 13 to 17 year award and the Adult, Nation Language and Spoken Word segments were won by Mr. Dwayne Adams.

The competition was organized by the University of the West Indies Open Campus, the Anguilla Public Library, the Department of Youth and Culture, and Summit Chambers.
