Police Report: Crime Up, Two Gun Incidents Within A Week |
| Publishing date: 19.06.2009 11:29 |
Law Enforcement Officers in Anguilla arrested a man following last week’s report of a gun being discharged. Tyrone Dunkley of Blowing Point was picked up by Police and appeared before the Magistrate. Inspector Paul Sinclair said Dunkley was remanded to Her Majesty’s Prison. He was charged with attempted murder, possession of a firearm and ammunition, and discharging a firearm.

Shortly after 1 am on Sunday, a man reported that he was standing outside a shop in George Hill (across the road from the tyre shop) with two other men when they were approached by three masked men. Sinclair stated that the men were dressed in black and one had a firearm. He said the armed man pointed the gun at the three and demanded they hand over their personal belongings. The would-be robbers were told that there was nothing to steal, at which point the weapon was discharged. The three bandits then ran off.
Sinclair disclosed that the scene was attended and examined by Police Officers but the identity of the offenders were still not known. He made an appeal to the people of George Hill, and anyone else who may have information, to come forward. The Inspector maintained that the information would be held in “the strictest confidence.” He remarked that two shooting incidents in a week were far too many and causd alarm and anxiety among members of the community.
Mr. Sinclair stressed that members of the force were continuing to be proactive in their efforts to arrest the offenders. He said the gun crimes, along with a number of burglaries at dwelling houses were disturbing. He added that his Drugs and Firearms Unit was “targeting their resources” and working closely with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and Beat and Patrol to combat “those very, very, antisocial crimes that, unfortunately, we are suffering from at the moment.”
Rape
Police have reported a rape incident in South Hill. They said the victim was interviewed and investigations were continuing. According to Sergeant Randolph Yearwood, another person was interviewed in connection with the rape but there was still need for more examination. It was understood that the victim knew her attacker, unlike the rape case reported last week.
Criminal Damage
There were eight cases of criminal damage for the period. Much of it resulted from the throwing of missiles, mainly rocks, pieces of blocks and wood, from the roadside, at vehicles as they passed. Police noted that only one case of missile throwing occurred in the Valley at the Queen Elizabeth Avenue this week. Others were at Shoal Bay, Little Dix, the Valley, West End, Long Bay and Blowing Point.
Items damaged comprised a front right tyre, two rear car tyres, front windscreen of a motor vehicle, a vehicle’s right side, a house window, the front windscreen of another vehicle, a car bonnet and a jeep.
Sergeant Yearwood believed the Queen Elizabeth Avenue incident may have been the same person or persons that perpetrated the crime in the past. He said the others may be sporadic. They all occurred at night.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. Illidge Richardson, stated that the Police would be continuing to “do all within our powers to see if we can find who these persons are before some innocent person dies.” The missile throwing was not continuous. “They are not doing it every week. They do it this week, then they would take some time before they do it again,” Richardson explained. So far none of the victims were able to identify any of the missle throwers.
More From the Blotter
The records for the period June 10 to 17 showed that 22 crimes were reported and one arrest was made. There were 7 burglaries: two in West End, two in the Valley, one in South Hill and two in Rey Hill.
Items stolen were two Black Berry phones, another cellular phone, one Sony digital camera, Coors Light and Heineken Beers, other alcoholic beverages, one plant clipper, one pair of gloves, one garden hose, one rake, eight bottles of plant food, US$400 in cash, one Sony laptop and two handheld PSP games.
There were three thefts for the week in Blowing Point, Tackling and The Valley. Items stolen included one gold chain, one car stereo and a goat which was later recovered with the owner who requested no further Police action in the matter.
The blotter shows one “taking of a conveyance in West End and seven minor traffic accidents."
