Superstar Wins Round-The-Island Boat Race |
| Publishing date: 19.06.2009 10:43 |
The round-the-island boat race provided the usual excitement when it took place on June 15, having been postponed from Anguilla Day due to weather conditions. A record of fifteen boats took part in the race that left from Sandy Ground just after 10.00 a.m.

Exactly five hours and 58 minutes later Superstar came through the markers to claim the winning prize. She was the first boat through the narrows and led the race the rest of the way. Real Deal had taken an early lead and was ahead for more than an hour or so at the beginning. Unfortunately five boats had to withdraw before noon with various problems: including Stinger, UFO, De Chan, Eagle and the newest boat on the island, Speed and Comfort.
The Superstar was well ahead, at one time as much as one mile, and four other boats were contending for the other places - Bluebird, De Tree, Real Deal and Light and Peace. Eventually Bluebird captured the second place; the next three boats were very close with Real Deal just edging out De Tree which was followed by Light and Peace.
The round-the-island race is sponsored by the Government of Anguilla and, as always, attracted a large number of persons both on land (at various vantage points), and on the sea, (following the boats).
