Leeward Islands Youth Track And Field Championship 2009


On Friday, 29th May, 2009, 31 of Anguilla's most promising athletes set off for St. Kitts to compete in the 2009 Leeward Islands Youth Track and Field Championships at the Silver Jubilee Stadium in Bird Rock. The 6 competing countries were the British Virgin Islands, Antigua and Barbuda, United States Virgin Islands, Nevis, Anguilla and host country St. Kitts.


Team Anguilla performed creditably amassing a total of 25 medals; 2 gold, 10 silver and 13 bronze. Anguilla placed third in the medal count, following St. Kitts and BVI who had a medal count of 51 and 47 respectively.

Nevis was fourth with 19 medals, Antigua and Barbuda were fifth with 13 and USVI was sixth with 1.

Three national records were broken by our athletes. Julisha Connor broke the Under 15 Girls Shot Put with a distance of 6.28m, surpassing the previous record of 5.16m held by Aprile Gumbs. Jonicia Richardson broke the Girls Under 15 800m in a time of 2 min 24.16 seconds, surpassing the record of 2 min 25.50 seconds previously held by Vincia Connor.

Julisha and Jonicia then teamed up with Kimouy Payne and Nicole Gumbs to break the 4 x 400m Relay record of 4 min 37 secs in a time of 4 min 18.29 seconds.
Anguilla's 2 gold medals were won by Janique Fleming of the Orealia Kelly Primary School in the Under 11 Girls High Jump; and by Kiyorie Woods of The Valley Primary School in the Under 11 Boys Cricket Ball Throw.

The team was accompanied by Alexis Ryan, Trevor "Ras Bucket" Davis, Nashaine Johnson, Rollins Richardson, Myrna Supersaud, Angela Brooks and Emris Rogers.
