Letters To The Editor - Need For More Piped Water

The Editor,
The Anguillian

Dear Sir:

NEED FOR MORE PIPED WATER

The present dry spell in Anguilla, though punctuated in recent days by a few scattered showers, has highlighted the growing need for a comprehensive distribution system of piped water throughout the island.

Today, as in years gone by, cisterns are integral water catchments and storage facilities at homes and offices, but the provision of running water by Government or company sources is always a requirement.

In addition to the reverse osmosis plant at Crocus Bay, there is the well field in The Valley where the water table is at a high level. So there is a much water of a good quality available on the island. The problem is that the cost of water has been too prohibitive, over the years, and even with some easement to farmers needing irrigation systems for their vegetable plots, the price needs to be better.

If the cost were to be lower, there would be a greater number of connections to the public water supply both for domestic and agricultural purposes. There is also the situation where a number of persons, with little or no financial support, live in humble homes with no water. How they manage is anyone’s guess. These persons should be provided with free water as a government subsidy.

Unfortunately, no one seems to be thinking about them, but our political aspirants will surely find them at election time for their votes.

R. N. Richardson,
Homeowner
