The 16-year-old Anguillian sang past her competitors on Sunday April 19 to take home the Teen Calypso Crown with her hit Who Is Responsible. She also nabbed the Road March matchup with the tune Roller Coaster to leave with that category’s title.
The reigning OECS Junior Champion’s, (Ms. Webster’s) crown collection includes three consecutive victories. She boasts a remarkable seven crown holdings which include two Road Marches. Her Road March exploits began with the success of her first outing in that category.
Roxxy, who was born in French St. Martin, is the daughter of local entrepreneurs Roland and Louise Webster. She is the younger sister of two other local calypsonians, Queen B and Calypso Ro.
In an interview with The Anguillian the confident, well spoken youth said, everyone wants to change her name but she begs to differ. She said she has been taking part in competitions since she was 11 years old, singing mainly in the Junior Calypso Competitions in St. Maarten. Roxxy added that only recently the category was divided into Junior (for the younger singers) and teens.
When asked about plans to compete in Anguilla where the family resides, Mr. Webster, Roxxy’s father, said “that was given a little break for now.” He noted that his daughter performed in Anguilla twice in the early stages of her career where once she was judged as tied with another competitor. He said she used the same song in the St. Maarten competition and won. But it didn’t stop there. The next year, she again used the same song in St. Kitts for the OECS competition and again won ahead of big names in the region. Webster pointed out that one of the calypsonians who was beaten that night had beaten the individual who tied with Roxxy in Anguilla. “This tells you the quality of the song. It was a hit. Three years after the song was still winning crowns,” he added.
Roxxy said Sunday’s experience was great: “Wow!” She almost whispered her exclamation, “Well, that was a good experience for sure…just preparing and getting everything together, working on my stage performance.” Ms. Webster admitted that, from what the judges told her last year, her stage performance was what she needed to work on. She said she worked on those areas with her father who “is pushing me all the time.” Webster said the competition was strong especially for the Road March section.
Lil’ Roxxy has two CDs under her belt. Her latest comprise six songs (including her competition pieces) divided equally between Calypso, and its faster cousin, Road March. The hit Who is Responsible speaks about the responsibility of adults for the youths around them and how they must be guided as they become adults themselves. Ms. Webster said the tune stresses that “responsibility start in the home so if parents are not responsible, most likely the children would not be.”
