Jamida Memorial Events Well Attended

Just fresh from the grand Festival Del Mar, held during the Easter holiday weekend, Island Harbour Bay was again the scene of much activity which attracted a large and appreciative crowd on Sunday, April 26.

It was the Jamida Webster Memorial Bicycle and B-class boat races, the second year of such events. There were two cycle races: one for primary school children who competed in a race from the Island Harbour Pier to the Welches Polyclinic and back and the other for senior cyclists who raced in various laps down to the western areas of the island.

Though the events commemorated the unforgettable violent incident that led to Jamida’s death in March 2003, they provided much fun and excitement for all.

The booths and other stalls, left over from Festival Del Mar, came in handy for vendors, spectators and participants as well.

This weekend there will be another sporting event at Island Harbour: a cricket match organised by villagers and other persons. It will be help on the Pond Fill, now ringed with sponsorship boards acknowledging financial contributions from a number of businesses and individuals.

Residents at Island Harbour are reliving the days when the Bay was ringed with many stately coconut palms on the western and southern sides, adding much beauty and shade to the beach. The majority of them heavily-bearing trees were uprooted or broken off by hurricanes as recent as Lenny in November 1999. Since then, the Elected Representative there, Kenneth Harrigan, along with a number of residents, planted a new set of coconut palm trees on the southern area fringe of the bay. These have now grown up beautifully providing much shade for beach-goers there and for various functions among them being the annual Festival Del Mar.
