‘SEA OF PEOPLE’ AT FESTIVAL DEL MAR


Festival Del Mar, now in its second year at Island Harbour, Anguilla, the island’s main fishing village, has been described as having been a tremendous success. Such was the large crowd in attendance that one onlooker, unable to find a more descriptive term for the mass assembly and activities, said the scene was “a sea of people, and a sea of events.”

Minister of Finance and Tourism, Victor Banks, said at the opening ceremony of the two-day festival on April 11 that it was an important event and congratulated the organizers, the people of Island Harbour and the participants in the various activities.

Acting Director of Tourism, Merlin Rogers, said the festival was a celebration of the people’s way of life and that the Tourist Board had found much pleasure in collaborating with the Island Harbour community in organising the festival. She was pleased that the event had attracted the international media to publicise what was being developed as a new tourism attraction on the island.


Chairman of the Festival Del Mar Committee, Othlyn Vanterpool, described the event as a resounding success. He thanked the committee members for their hard work, dedication and resolve to make the festival a successful undertaking. The members were Festivals Coordinator, (Fritzroy Tomilson), Linda Lake, Jansie Webster, Porcha Bryan, John Lloyd, Keith Harrigan, Timmy Webster and Claude Smith. He was also grateful to all the sponsors and other persons in a list which space did not allow to be mentioned in this report.


The results of the competitions were as follows: In the deep-sea fishing tournament (wahoo/kingfish category), the winners were Benet Smith, 1st; Pat Webster, 2nd; and Roger Smith, 3rd. In the tuna/mahi mahi category, Roger Smith took 1st and 2nd places. The winners in the bottom fishing category were Naboth Richardson, 1st and Justa Duncan, 2nd. Roger Smith was the overall winner.


The results of the boat races were as follows: A-class race, Real Deal placed 1st; Super Star, 2nd; UFO, 3rd; Light & Peace, 4th and Wasp, 5th. In the B-class race, Magician placed 1st; R.O.B.B. 2nd; Tornado, 3rd; and De Storm, 4th.
In the culinary competition, Keith & Harriet Harrigan won the Best Seafood Salad; Warren & Pam Baker, the Best Seafood Soup; Project Hands, the Best Traditional Seafood; and Keith & Harriet Harrigan, the Best Grilled Seafood.

In the Sunfish Races, the results were as follows: On Saturday Hayden Bryan 1st, Keithroy Connor 2nd and Tim Webster 3rd.

On Sunday Hayden Bryan 1st, Keithroy Connor 2nd and Shaquille Bryan 3rd.

The large crowd in attendance at Festival Del Mar came from all over the island, making the event the success and enjoyment it has been.
