The Trinidad Cricket Team was given an official welcome at Government House during an official reception in their honour hosted by Acting Governor of Anguilla the Honourable Stanley Reid.

The event was held last Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 in the evening. Dignitaries at the function included Acting Deputy Governor the Honourable Larry Franklyn, Minister of Finance the Honourable Victor Banks, Minister of Social Development with responsibility for Sports the Honourable Evans Rogers, and Opposition Member the Honourable Edison Baird and the Attorney General.
Minister of Social Development Rogers welcomed the Trinidad Team to Anguilla on behalf of the Government and people. He remarked that although Trinidad would have a different view, the Leeward Island Team is in a good position and, although they could not win the tournament they should come second if they produce maximum points out of the weekend game. He expressed disappointment of the Leeward’s no-show at the function.
Minister Rogers said he hoped that members of the team who were making their first visit had a little time to look around Anguilla. A former national cricketer, Rogers joked that in his cricketing days, teams in the Leeward Islands Tournament, especially from Nevis and Antigua, booked their passage for home after two days of a three-day game. He hoped the local wicket was prepared properly enough to avoid excessive runs but wished the Anguilla’s representative on the Leeward Islands Team a century. He pledged his support for the weekend event.
Meanwhile, Acting Governor Reid, in welcoming the tourists, expressed his wish to have been able to extend the welcome to the Leeward Islands Team as well. Governor Reid said he was happy to have the members of the Trinidad Team and hoped that they would share not only in the official activities but also enjoy the island’s hospitality.
It was not clear why the Leeward’s team did not attend the official welcome at Government House.
