DISCUSSING THE ECONOMIC SQUEEZE


Government officials and representatives of public sector staff associations and unions scratched their heads for solutions when they met on Tuesday afternoon this week with the current economic crisis being the focal point of their discussions.

In attendance from the Government were Chief Minister Osbourne Fleming, Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Victor Banks, Minister of Social Development, Evans McNeil Rogers and Acting Permanent Secretary in the Chief Minister’s Office, Kenneth Hodge.

A press release from the Chief Minister’s Office said Executive Members attended from the Anguilla Teachers’ Union, the Civil Service Association and the Police Welfare Association.

“The Government Ministers all spoke to the current fiscal situation as well as possible steps being contemplated to address shortfalls in revenue including reducing expenditure,” the release stated. “A number of new measures aimed at increasing revenue for Government were also discussed.

“The meeting was described as being cordial and productive and there are plans for both sides to meet again in the near future to continue discussions.”
