Prosperous Art In Anguilla

Sir:

Prosperous Art In Anguilla

I would be grateful if you could kindly publish this letter of observation in The Anguillian.

Those turns and winds of one’s life road take you to the most unexpected corners of this wonderful creation by God. That is how I got to Anguilla, an amazing spirit of sand situated at the northeastern end of the West Indies. This lovely little island displays the features common to the capricious exuberant geography of the other Caribbean islands and does not differ much from the others but in one aspect that has called my attention deeply: its art.

From the little I have seen of the island, it seems to me that this is a haven for sensitive souls who want to be creative and live of their art. The quality of art that can be found here is all kinds, going from colourful naïf tin-made reptiles that cling to the walls of the souvenir shops of the Caribbean to the amazing creations of ceramic and carving made by well-reputed neighbours on the island.

Anguilla resembles a fertile soil that let art seeds flourish in the most desirable way for artists and for those of us who enjoy their creations. Remarkable art makers have found the way to make a good living amidst the simplicity of the island life and the complexities of habouring well-off visitors and potential clients. Thanks to the endless inspiration coming from the gorgeous colourful environment that fuels their creations, these explorers of colours, shapes and textures, have managed to value their time and skills in the right measure: the dream of every artist in the world.

I still have a whole world of discoveries of Anguillian treasures ahead of me. This is just the superficial inspection of a beginner. Let me wait for the ripples to settle down to have a better, deeper insight of my new home island.
