Letter To The Editor - Of Mice and Man

Dear Sir:

Of Mice and Men

It was a disgrace to listen to the House of Assembly on February 24th with Deputy Speaker, Keesha Webster, in the Chair.

It was clear to all and sundry that the Members on both sides of the House were bent on taking advantage of the absence of the substantive Speaker, Mr. David Carty, to put across their own political posturing without give two hoots of public opinion or the youth of the island.

Last week Thursday’s criticism leveled by Mr. Carty of this gross disrespect in which the Honourable House was plunged to a place of dishonour and cat calls was risky to some extent, but was right. Democracy and the free speech it seeks to guarantee must not be taken for granted and allowed to sink to ridiculous proportions just to give the impression that one can be accommodating or tolerant beyond the norm. Democracy has rules to follow and in the House of Assembly, the Speaker’s Chair (not the man per say) is indeed the symbol of that authority.

I share the view that big men must not behave like little boys as expressed by the Honourable Donna Banks. It is a serious indictment against them when they do like when the cat is out they play like mice.
