Police Report: Rape, Burglary And Fatal Road Accidents


In the Police Report on Wednesday this week, the media was told that on Monday, March 16 police officers responded to a report of an attempted robbery at the National Bank of Anguilla. On arrival the police found John Lake Jr. of Cauls Bottom armed with a machete demanding money from the bank’s staff. He was disarmed and arrested.

He was charged with assault on police, being in possession of an offensive weapon and theft of a machete. He was taken to the before the Magistrate’s Court and remanded to prison on March 17th.

This was the second time that Lake, believed to be in his late teens or early twenties, was arrested for staging a daylight attack on the bank.

In another case reported by the police, Mark Langlaise of Dominica, residing at Blowing Point, was convicted in the High Court before Madam Justice Price-Findlay upon an indictment of indecent assault on a minor committed on March 5, 2006. He was sentenced to three years in prison.

It was also reported that Rolandito Richardson of Blowing Point, was sentenced to eight years in prison by the High Court Judge on an indictment of rape committed on 14 May, 2007. He was charged for rape, burglary and robbery. He pleaded guilty on the charge of rape, but no evidence was offered on the other charges.

Kerin Lake of South Hill was fined three thousand dollars by the Judge for dangerous driving on June 7, 2007 resulting in the death of Paul Plank on the Sandy Ground road. He was charged for causing death by dangerous driving and speeding. No evidence was offered for causing death by dangerous driving.

There is another road fatality which the Police are investigating. It involves Irwin Reid of South Hill the driver of motor bus C-335. He has been charged in an accident on the Blowing Point Road in the vicinity of the Christian Fellowship Church which claimed the life of Cynthia Jean Vannest, a 50 year old American citizen living at North Hill. She was at the time riding a pedal cycle. As a result of the collision between the bus and the cycle Ms. Vannest was dead on arrival at the Princess Alexandra Hospital on Thursday, March 12th. Reid has been released on the bail in the sum of $15,000.00.

The regular Police Report for March 11 to 18 shows that seven (7) crimes were committed during the period, among them being two burglaries at Rey Hill and Long Bay. The items stolen were a helmet, a bicycle and a tool kit. There was one report of attempted robbery.

Two thefts were reported at Rey Hill and Stoney Ground in which a ladies’ purse and a machete were stolen.

Five arrests were made during the period – one male for wounding, a female for conveying articles to a prisoner; one male for causing death by dangerous driving, another to prevent a breach of the peace, and a third male for attempted robbery.
