Police Thwart Prisoner Escape In Nick Of Time

Police in Anguilla reported on Wednesday this week that following a tip off from an anonymous telephone caller, they were just in time to stop a prisoner who had already cut his way through his cell from escaping. What is more, is that the perimeter fence had also already been cut obviously by an outside accomplice to facilitate the prisoner’s exit from the prison’s compound.

“Between 7 p.m. and 11pm [on Tuesday] the Royal Anguilla Police Force, acting on information reported to the police, responded to Her Majesty’s Prison where in conjunction with the prison authorities we thwarted a prison break that was in motion at the time,” Police Superintendent Rudolph Proctor told reporters.

“We entered the prison compound around 2300 hours and we commenced a search of a prison cell housing convicted prisoner Kallus Rogers. Our officers and the prison staff discovered that the inner wire mesh in that prison cell and the metal bars were cut and completely severed from the window, thus making it easy for the person occupying that cell to come out.

“A further search of that cell revealed two pieces of hacksaw blades, a two-by-four, a number of screws and two hinges. The Police officers working with the prison’s staff again discovered that the perimeter fence was breached, some person or persons having cut a whole in the fence.”
Superintendent Proctor said that with the assistance of the police the prisoner was re-located and placed in a secured cell. He stated that at the moment there was no information to suggest that any other prisoner was involved. As he was speaking, police and prison personnel were making certain that there were no further breaches in any of the cell blocks or the perimeter fence.

The police said that it was the third attempt made by Kallus Rogers to escape prison where he was jailed for murder. In the first attempt he actually got out but was picked up in South Hill. The second time he made his way to St Martin but was eventually brought back to Anguilla. All of this occurred in 2006.
Mr. Proctor said the anonymous caller did something good not only for law enforcement but for Anguilla as the escape of the prisoner would have caused negative reactions on the island. He stated that the police are not only trying to target prisoners wishing to escape but also those who are assisting the prisoners and that the investigations would be wide and long.
