The fun-filled events, preceded by a colourful march-past by the competing teams from the Central Baptist Church-administered school, were held at the Sandy Ground playing field on Thursday, February 26. Principal of the school, Andrew Blake, told The Anguillian that the activities included 100, 200, 300, 400 and 1500-metre relay races for the older children, while the pre-school students engaged in potato and lime and spoon races, 50, 60 and 150-meter relays.

He said the events were part of developing athletics within the school community, enabling the students to have an understanding of the importance of track and field activities to their growth. “It is not just academics, but sporting is very, very important,” Mr. Blake stated. “From this sports day we will decide on the members we should use in our track team to participate in the Primary Schools’ Athletic Competition.”

The school, which has a student role 165, now has a full-time physical education teacher in the person of Miguel Walker who coaches football and athletics. A girls’ football team is soon to be formed to complement the boys’ team to strengthen the school’s perfrormance against other schools on the island.

Pastor Cecil Richardson, Chairman of the School Board, commented that physical education was always an important part of the whole man. “We think it is one way to be disciplined and to compete,” he said. “At the same time it helps us to select those who are most qualified to participate in the island-wide Primary Schools Competition. It is a very important part of their education development.”
