Methodists Celebrate Men’s Lord’s Day

The Methodist Church in Anguilla joined with other circuits throughout the Caribbean and Americas to celebrate Men’s Lord’s Day on Sunday, February 22. On that day, laymen conducted the morning services in all the six congregations in Anguilla.

While Local Preachers performed the function of liturgists, laymen who did not preach regularly delivered the sermons. Those who delivered sermons were Bro, Victor Banks at Bethel, Bro. Claud Richardson at Ebenezer, Bro. Elvet Hughes at Immanuel, Bro. Darwin Hazell at Zion and Bro. Perry Richardson at Sandy Ground. At the Maranatha Congregation, however, Bro. Chrispen Gumbs, a layman from the Anglican Church, delivered the message.

The congregations were thrilled as various men’s groups and individuals rendered special musical selections which included singing and instrumental renditions.
At Bethel the Men’s Choir rendered a stirring Negro Spiritual that had the congregation swaying in their seats. At Sandy Ground a powerful duet was sung by Brothers Ensor Gumbs and Andy Richardson.

The Congregation at Ebenezer, which also celebrated Harvest Sunday, was specially blessed as the men sang the anthem “Oh Taste and See”. They performed the same selection during the Harvest Cantata in the afternoon but when called for an encore, sang the Gospel song “More Love To Thee”.

The services were well received and exposed the gifts and talents of the men, of the congregations, which have often been unexploited. Many congregations see this as a new start for the various men’s groups which have languished for some time.
