Smith Obtains Master’s Degree In Social Development

Mr. Clive F. Mr. Smith, who studied during the academic year 2007-2008, is the Senior Social Worker at the Department of Community Development where he heads the unit responsible for Elderly and Disabled Persons.

During his studies he had a short attachment at the UK Department of Constitutional Affairs, Equality and Communication which has responsibilities similar to those of the Department of Social Development in Anguilla and specifically to units with responsibility for Senior Citizens and Challenged individuals. He said in a report on his studies that he had requested the attachment to gain knowledge about policies and procedures in Wales where there was a more socially-advanced system of social development.

“I benefited tremendously from my studies and exposure in the UK,” Mr. Smith wrote. “I regard Swansea University, which is in a fairly safe community, as an ideal place of study. What I especially liked about the professors is that they were not just academics in the field of Social Development, but persons who had served in various parts of the underdeveloped and developing world including Latin-America and the Caribbean, Asia and Africa. Their experiences in the field made the lessons they taught more meaningful, relevant and interesting to me as a student.”

Mr. Smith’s first experience at a higher institute of learning outside Anguilla was in the early 1990s when he attended Caribbean Union College in Trinidad where he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree awarded by Andrew’s University in Michigan, United States. Earlier he completed a four-month residential course in The Principles and Practice of Social Work at the University of The West Indies School of Continuing Studies at Mona, Jamaica. He has since attended various other courses and workshops in such subject areas as Child Maintenance and Visitation, Domestic Violence Intervention, Youth Counselling and Disaster Preparedness.

At the Mount Fortune Seventh-day Adventist Church on Saturday, February 7, Mr. Smith thanked the Governor’s Office and the Government of Anguilla for the opportunity given to him to further his studies in Wales and his family and friends for their support.
