The Anguillian Primate, who is also Bishop of the Diocese of the Northeastern Caribbean and Aruba, is the most Senior Bishop in the Province and is widely tipped to be elected as Archbishop when he and another member of the House of Bishops stand for election later this year.
On Monday, this week, Acting Archbishop Brooks took his first action in his newly-assumed position when he issued a declaration announcing that the post of Bishop of Guyana, held by the Rt. Reverend Randolph George, had now become vacant with his retirement on December 31, 2008. It is expected that a new Bishop will be appointed there in due course.
Acting Archbishop Brooks has taken charge of the Province of the West Indies following the December 31, 2008 retirement of Archbishop Drexel Gomez, a long holder of the appointment. Gomez has also retired from the post of Bishop of The Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands. The new head of that Diocese is the Rt. Rev. Laish Boyd who previously had been the Co-adjutor Bishop there.
The early filling of the appointment of Bishop of Guyana is important as all the Diocesan posts must be filled before the election of a new Archbishop of the West Indies can be undertaken.
