Young Student To Give Piano Recital

Conlloyd Gumbs, one of Anguilla’s upcoming musicians, is to give a piano recital at Bethel Methodist Church on December 14, commencing at 5.00 p.m. He is a music student of that church’s pianist, Lois Hazell-Carbon, who is helping to develop and showcase his talent.

The 15-year-old Fourth Former at the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School, started his music lessons at the age of seven years under the tutorship of Candice Fleming of South Hill then after one year transferred to Carbon’s Music Studio where he has been tutored for some seven or eight years.

The Grade 8 student in Piano Music and Theory, is being tutored along the training programme offered through the London-based Associated Board of the Royal School of Music and has shown remarkable skill and potential for a high level of accomplishment.

His recital will feature classical and other music. His pieces will include Furelise by Beethoven; and in the second half of the recital he will play such love tunes as One Moment in Time. He will play another love song accompanied by clarinet player, Ojeda Vanterpool. Other presentations by him will include You Raise Me Up and How Majestic Is Your Name. He will also play at least two jazz songs.

Conlloyd has played in recitals before including those which usually follow examinations, and earlier this year he performed at the Sandy Ground Methodist Church. He currently is a musician at the Mount Fortune Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Asked what influenced his love for music, the quiet and well-focused youngster replied: “It helps you to relax. The hard parts teach you how to face challenges coming your way and bring about a lot of concentration…My parents told me that they always saw me admiring music and every time I am around a piano I get excited.” Apart from his formal music training at Carbon Studios, he has his own Yamaha Keyboard at home to keep him busy and practicing.

What advice Conlloyd is offering to other young persons in Anguilla? “If you don’t do as good as you would like, just always take that big failure and make it your greatest success,” he advised.

He is the son of Conrad Gumbs, Superintendent of Prisons and Mrs. Ena Gumbs, an Administrative Secretary with the Health Authority of Anguilla.
