WORRIES OVER COST OF FUEL IN ANGUILLA

The Anguilla Government is concerned that although there has been a reduction in the cost of fuel per barrel on the world market, there has been no real drop price in at the pumps on the island.

This disturbing matter was raised by Chief Minister Osbourne Fleming at his weekly press conference on Tuesday this week. “I want to express how concerned we are in Anguilla and as a Government with the cost of fuel in Anguilla, today,” he told local reporters. “What we have seen in the region and by extension America is that the price of oil (namely gasoline and diesel) has dropped significantly. However, what we note here in Anguilla is that the prices are still high. We in the Government do not control the price of oil. That is dealt by the providers/vendors, namely Sol and Delta.”

The Chief Minister said that in order to address the situation, the Government had scheduled a meeting later this week or next week with the two companies to discuss two matters: “One, what was the rationale for determining the price of fuel and, why is it that the price of crude oil has dropped below sixty dollars today, yet we have not seen any significant drop at the pumps?” He stressed that the situation had reached a point where it was necessary “for Government to get involved and to find out exactly what is happening.”
