The keynote address, on the theme Empowered to go forward, was delivered by Sanford Richardson, a former teacher at the school, now Commissioner of Social Development. Mr. Richardson, who captivated his audience throughout his presentation, challenged the graduates to believe in themselves, remember their heritage, be willing to rise above difficulties and obstacles, find a cause for which to live or die and to have faith in God.
Mrs. Lake, in her congratulatory remarks, noted that she was disappointed that many students did not qualify for graduation because they failed to follow basic rules and regulations, even though they were aware of the consequences.
Shana Smith gave the Valedictory Speech; and the Vote of Thanks was given jointly by Isabel Rosario and Brittany Jeffers.
There were fifty-one (51) subject awards shared among thirty-four (34) students. Natalie Richardson, who obtained the best CXCV results, was a recipient of a laptop from Webster Dyrud Mitchell. Most Outstanding Graduate, Fedalia Richardson, also received a laptop compliments First Anguilla Trust & Co. Other special awards included the National Bank of Anguilla awards for: Best CXC performance in English A – Fedalia Richardson; Best Math – Ashanda Connor; Best Accounts – Shana Smith; and Best CXC results – Natalie Richardson. The 2008 Calder Simon Award went to Keivois Lake.
This year there was another special award for a student who demonstrated keen interest in his work and excelled in sports.
The Chezroy Desouza Award sponsored by Chezroy’s Year 5 (2006-07) English Class went to Neil Gumbs. The school has expressed thanks to Teacher, Mrs. Rosena Brooks and the students for their initiative.
The Music Department must again be commended for the exceptional performances of the students,” Mrs. Lake, the school’s Principal said in her statement. “Everyone was thrilled with the selections by the Steel Orchestra, Concert Band, Guitar Club, Choir and Graduating Class. Another positive feature was the inclusion of the students’ own composition entitled “Empowerment to go forward” sung by members of the graduation class. Special mention must also be made of the teachers of the Visual Arts Department for the decoration of the hall.”
