J’ouvert Morning, a highlight of the Anguilla Summer Festival is usually a bustling event as hundreds of Anguillians and visitors make their way to Sandy Ground in a street jam session. As was the case this year, as in previous years, the musical and dancing trek mushroomed into a big fete on the beach as the milling throng awaited the start of a week of exciting boat races.

The rest of the carnival activities both at the Landsome Bowl Cultural Centre and on street went basically well. But while the Summer Festival started and continued fine, it did not end well during the Last Lap Sunrise Street Jam on Saturday, August 9.
It was in the vicinity of the Peoples Market in The Valley when, about 9 a.m. fighting broke out and the crowd was pelted with stones, bottles and other missiles in the heavily policed event by Anguillian Police Officers and security personnel lending support from neighbouring St. Maarten.
It was in this violent situation that 19-year-old Orlando Johnson sustained a knife wound and unfortunately died around midnight at the Princess Alexandra Hospital. Another person, Kareem Lake received a stab wound and Rose Richardson was wounded when she struck on the head. Several other persons were also hurt.
Johnson, who was born in Jamaica, came to Anguilla at an early age in March 1999 and attended the Road Primary School and later the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School. At the time of his death he was residing with his mother Kharel Carty at Cedar Village, North Side and was an employee at CuisinArt Resort and Spa at the beach section.
His mother, who is being comforted by a number of persons, described her son as having been a jovial, friendly and very loving person.
Death Of Clinton Richardson
Just at the end of the Summer Festival, another but unrelated tragedy occurred when Clinton Richardson of Blowing Point lost his life in the early hours of Sunday morning, August 10 in a road accident.
Richardson, who made 33 years on July 26, was killed when the car he was driving reportedly collided with a utility pole on The Farrington road, in the vicinity of the CompNation business establishment. His death is the third road fatality in Anguilla for the year. The young man was the son of Pastor and Mrs. Ambrose Richardson of the Christian Fellowship Church at Blowing Point.
