It will be ten days of frolic and merriment in Anguilla following the grand opening ceremony and fireworks display of the 2008 Summer Festival at the Landsome Bowl Cultural Centre in the Valley township on Thursday, July 31.

Scores of visitors and returning Anguillians from various parts of the world have entered the island’s shores for the spectacular annual cultural events which have now become an integral part of the territory’s tourism industry and the entertainment lives of many of the island’s citizenry.

The actual festival was preceded by a number of warm-up pre-carnival events which included the Miss Tiny Tot Pageant, Machel Montano in Concert, the NBA Peter Perkins Memorial Boat Race and Fun Day Games at Sandy Ground, the Miss Ecstasy Regional Pageant and the Miss Anguilla Swim Suit and Costume Competition. The latter, held on July 27, attracted a huge crowd and included various other performances by the Pepper Steppers, a youth group of innovative and impressive rope skippers, the Klassique Academy of Dance Anguilla and the CCB Talented Teen Show Contestants.

The schedule of festival activities will continue on Friday, August 1 with Soca Classic lll, featuring Gipsy, Baron, Explainer, Denise Plummer, Winston Soso and MC Spranalang.
Saturday August 2: Kiddies Parade, Soca Band Class and Band-o-Rama.

Sunday, August 3: Heneken Warm-up Boat Race at Sandy Ground followed in the evening by the Prince & Princess Show, the Junior Calypso and Female Calypso Show.

August Monday, August 4: J’Ouvert Morning followed later by a Boat Race at Sandy Ground and the Caribbean Beach Party featuring Tabou Combo & Shurwayne Winchester.
Tuesday August 5: Island Harbour Boat Race and CCB Talented Teen Show.
Wednesday, August 6: Sandy Ground Boat Race and Calypso Monarch Competition.
Thursday August 7: Boat Race at Meads Bay and Miss Anguilla Queens Pageant.
Friday August 8: Parade of Troupes starting 11 a.m.
Saturday August 9: Last Lap – a sunrise street jam in the Valley and in the evening the Leeward Islands Calypso Show.
Sunday August 10: Champion of Champions Boat Race at Sandy Ground and the Grand Finale at Landsome Bowl.

Much commendation is owned to the Carnival Committee, its various sub-committees, other groups and individuals and the Anguilla Tourist Board and Festivals Office as well as the participating bands, other performers and contestants who all made the 2008 Anguilla Summer Festival the success that it is envisaged to be.
