Fixing An Eye Sore

The imposing Edison L. Hughes Complex in The Valley is an eyesore in the heart of the Valley Town Centre but thankfully something is being done about it in terms of restoration.

The building is named after the late Mr. Edison Hughes, the first Anguillian appointed Principal of the Valley Secondary School who also held the post of Chief Education Officer and later Cabinet Secretary.

The complex comprises an Adult Library and a Children’s Library on the downstairs. Upstairs are the Teachers’ Resource Centre, several classrooms and education offices.

“The building has not been refurbished for sometime externally,” Rodney Rey, Permanent Secretary Education, said. “We have done some work on the interior. We have just done some repainting and air-conditioned the Children’s Library and the Senior Adult Library. We covered the courtyard which used to cause flooding inside the building, and we are presently looking at upgrading the exterior of the building.

“Quite a number of the shutters have deteriorated and we need to work on that and that will happen in the second half of the year.”

A total sum of three hundred thousand dollars has been approved for the refurbishing of the complex.
